Ubod, an alternative to MyFitnessPal
Ubod is a calorie counter for iPhone and Android with a free plan that keeps barcode scanning free and shows no third-party ads, and lets you log a meal from a photo of your plate. MyFitnessPal is a larger app: its food database is much bigger and it connects to more devices, but since October 2022 its barcode scanner is reserved for Premium members and its free plan shows ads.

What Ubod and MyFitnessPal have in common
- A food diary with daily calorie and macro (protein, carbohydrate, fat) goals.
- Barcode scanning of packaged foods.
- Weight tracking over time.
- Sync with Apple Health and Health Connect.
- A free plan and a paid subscription, on iPhone and Android.
What Ubod does differently
- Barcode scanning is free in Ubod. In MyFitnessPal it has required Premium since 1 October 2022.
- Ubod's free plan shows no third-party ads; MyFitnessPal's free plan is paid for by ads.
- Ubod can log a meal from a photo of your plate on the free plan, a few times a day. MyFitnessPal's Meal Scan needs Premium and the app set to English.
- Reference foods in Ubod come from Ciqual, the French food composition table published by ANSES, next to branded products from Open Food Facts; MyFitnessPal's database is built by its community.
- Fanak, Ubod's fennec fox coach, answers your questions in the app and keeps your streak going.
- You can connect Ubod to ChatGPT or Claude and log a meal by talking to the assistant.
Where MyFitnessPal may suit you better
- A much larger food database: MyFitnessPal states more than 20.5 million foods, so rare or local products are more likely to be there already.
- More connections: MyFitnessPal links with more than 35 fitness trackers, smartwatches and apps, and has Apple Watch and Wear OS apps. Ubod only syncs through Apple Health and Health Connect.
- An intermittent fasting tracker (Premium) and, in some English-speaking countries, a meal planner with Premium+. Ubod has no fasting tracker.
- A website where you can log food from a computer.
Moving from MyFitnessPal to Ubod
- Write down your current calorie target, your macro targets and your weight in MyFitnessPal.
- Install Ubod and answer the first questions (goal, weight, height, activity): Ubod works out your daily targets, and you can change them at any time.
- Log your usual foods again: scan their barcode, search for them or take a photo of your plate. Your recent foods then come back in one tap.
- Connect Apple Health or Health Connect so your steps and workouts count towards the day.
- Ubod cannot import a diary from MyFitnessPal: your past entries stay in MyFitnessPal, so export them there first if you want to keep a copy.
